Researchers have determined the Falcon 9 launch in August 2017 cut a giant hole in the Earth’s ionosphere.
After gathering launch data of last year, the Falcon 9 rocket didn’t just create circular shockwaves, it also cut a 900-kilometre-wide hole in the plasma of the ionosphere that lasted for 3 hours after. It was basically like a magnetic storm concentrated in the area.
it happened was actually because of how light the Falcon 9’s payload was on the mission. It was carrying the Formosat-5 satellite, weighing in at just about 475 kg. What usually happens is that rockets, because of all the weight they’re carrying, launch in an oblique trajectory that helps reduce the pull of gravity.
